Every town has its hidden treasures, and the Northern Gold Coast is no exception. With a cultural presence like the one it has, how could it not have so many things for residents to discover? From the historical banyan trees that sit at the entrance of Palm Beach Gardens to BallenIsles Country Club, there are plenty of great landmarks and outdoor artworks for the residents of the area to discover.

Banyan Trees

Thanks to the efforts of town founder John D. MacArthur and a very unique story, banyans have come to represent Palm Beach Gardens. The webpage on them says that these are the stately trees that drivers may see towering above buildings and other trees around the area, stretching to the ground with vines that hang from their branches. Their stately manner and refined aesthetic left such an impression on MacArthur that he worked in ensuring that banyans would sit at the entrance of town. In his efforts in relocating one to its new site, it accidentally took out some train signal wires, and even fell onto the track! However, the tree itself was located successfully, and another tree joined it roughly a year later. Both still sit in the same spot today.

PGA Flyover Bridge Lights

If the banyans best represent old world Florida, the lights on the PGA Bridge flyover best represent new world Florida! Simple, understated, yet iconic and elegant, any seasonal resident or local could identify them instantly. Come the holiday seasons, the lights on the bridge will shift in color, as noted on the Bridge Lighting Schedule page online.

Windows On The Floating World at Mounts Botanical Garden

When rainy season comes to South Florida, it starts all kinds of natural processes below the surface. Seeds get the nutrients and water they need to grow, frogs come to lay eggs, and wading birds visit to find things to eat. Windows On The Floating World at Mounts Botanical Garden lets guests see the wetland come to life before their eyes by allowing them to literally step into the wetland garden, thanks to the exhibits unique metal catwalk system. Mounts’ webpage dedicated to the exhibit describes how the unique hexagonal design of the walkways provides ‘windows’ for guests to look down into the water and see the wetland coming to life before their eyes. The display’s efforts in bringing guests closer to the water and wildlife, along with the natural way that the metal walkways have been incorporated into the garden, suggest the delicate harmony between man and nature.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was first lit in 1860 and guided ships away from shore, helping shipwrecked sailors in their time of need. Its iconic shape and bright red color is emblematic of Jupiter now. Today, the lighthouse serves as a museum where visitors can climb to the top and enjoy the panoramic view of the area, as well as visit the interactive exhibits to see how people lived all those years ago.

Sea Turtles

While not a brick-and-mortar sculpture or building to discover, sea turtles are the natural gifts of the Gold Coast. The beaches here serve as the nesting spots of leatherbacks, loggerheads, and the occasional hawksbill sea turtle. Those who snorkel and dive might be able to catch sight of a sea turtle when they go underwater offshore, but one’s best chance of seeing a sea turtle would be by attending a local nature center’s turtle walk.
