More than 750 local families battling hunger amid the new coronavirus pandemic received much-needed donations of food last weekend as part of a massive volunteer effort.

Through a food giveaway organized by Feed the Hungry Pantry, more than 120 pounds of meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, eggs, canned goods and dry goods were distributed to hungry families from across the county Saturday.

The giveaway at the United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach was a coordinated effort involving more than 100 volunteers, nonprofit groups, supermarkets and local farms and businesses, said Dan Shorter, founder/director of Feed the Hungry Pantry.

The West Palm Beach-based nonprofit organization provides food to hungry families throughout Palm Beach County.

Food for Saturday’s distribution program was collected through donations from Feeding South Florida, Publix, Costco, Walmart, the Honeybaked Ham Co. and other local businesses, and was transported to the distribution site in a 35-foot refrigerated truck supplied by the BallenIsles Charities Foundation.

The organization, which awarded $720,000 to area non-profits last month as part of its 2020 “Making a Difference” Grants Awards Ceremony, provides financial and in-kind support to area organizations providing civic and educational programs, health and human services, and support for the environment.

“We have awarded over $3.7 million to local nonprofit and civic organizations that help those less fortunate in our community,” BallenIsles Charities Foundation President Mark Freeman said. “The impact grant of the refrigerated truck to Feed the Hungry Pantry, besides helping to feed thousands of the food insecure each month, is now making a difference in fighting the coronavirus.”

Many of those receiving food Saturday had been laid off recently, Shorter said.

About 80 families were among that group.

“We expect this to get worse before it gets better because pantries have closed, and they’re sending their families to us,” Shorter said in an email.

Last week, the BallenIsles Charities Foundation refrigerated truck collected about 50,000 pounds of meat, vegetables and fruit to be distributed to hungry families, Shorter said.
