BALLENISLES COUNTRY CLUB, Fla. (CBS12) — BallenIsles Country Club is sacred ground for golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

“You come back and say 'wow, I’ve had a lot of fond memories here',” said Nicklaus.

On Sunday, the country club honored Nicklaus on the 50th anniversary since the 18-time major winner won the 53rd PGA Championship at BallenIsles in 1971, which was referred to as PGA National at the time.

In front of dozens of country club members and avid golf fans, Jack was honored for his victory in front of the very same 18 green where he won it.

A victory that made him the first golfer to win all four of the professional majors at least twice each.

Nicklaus was humbled by the crowd and glad to be back on a course that means so much to him.

“Thank you very, very much for honoring me today,” said Nicklaus, “it’s always a pleasure to come back to a place that you’ve enjoyed and had success at.”
