After an eight-month long, $7.5 million golf course renovation project, the famed South Course at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida reopened in January 2020. After a short closure due to Covid restrictions, the course is buzzing with activity and Members are enjoying all it has to offer!

In the redesign process, it was important to the Club to uphold the legacy of the South Course, while still bringing a new strategic approach. Golf course architect Rees Jones modernized the playability and course design to what is expected in today’s private club environment.

By reshaping golf holes and installing new drainage, Jones was able to improve the turf quality and playability, while also making fairways and rough areas passable much more quickly following heavy rain events. By re-contouring fairways during the renovation, Jones improved surface drainage and visibility, while also helping to contain slightly errant shots, and better reward well-played shots. A majority of the pre-renovation green complexes were elevated, thus limiting the different types of approach and recovery shots a golfer could play during their round. By rebuilding green complexes to varying shapes, contours and elevations, Jones created more spots on greens for hole locations, allowing golfers to hit a variety of approach and recovery shots, and provided more consistency for maintenance and function.

When asked about this renovation project, Jones, known the world over as The Open Doctor, described reconstructed holes 7, 8 and 9 as “The Stretch that will make or break your day.” With water in play on every shot from tee to green and long yardages to navigate, this run of holes will require skillful decisions. The Doctor recommends you play strategically to avoid needing a script when the holes are finished.

The South Course was designed by Joe Lee and Dick Wilson, originally built in 1964. Throughout its 55-year history the course has been modified twice; first in 1967 to accommodate the construction of BallenIsles’ North Course; and again in 1999 which included re-grassing and numerous bunker additions. With the South Course renovation now complete, BallenIsles Country Club is home to a trio of three modern day championship golf courses, including the North Course and famed East Course which has hosted the game’s greatest players in the PGA Championship, World Cup and numerous other golf classics.
