As Interest in Tennis Surges Players Continue to Choose This Club as Home
For a year that presented unprecedented challenges, one sport continued to bring communities together and has grown to be among the most popular today. The USTA announced that tennis participation increased 22% in 2020, according to recent data from the Physical Activity Council’s Participation (PAC) report. While we continue to face obstacles, “it’s evident that many people recognize tennis as the ideal social distancing sport, which puts it in a great position to continue to grow and allow people to stay active and social in a healthy and safe manner” said Mike Dowse, USTA Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director. Whether intending to stay active, improve racket skills, or compete with friends, 21.64 million people are hitting the courts—especially in this active South Florida Country Club. BallenIsles Country Club serves up one of the best spots to play—here’s why.

An Exceptional Tennis Staff

From clinics to adult boot camps, round robins, and private lessons, no matter what age or skill level, if you want to improve your game, you’ll find an instructional program here that meets your needs. Not only is member talent put on display at BallenIsles, but tennis staff are some of the most decorated professionals. Gary Henderson, Director of Tennis has an impressive playing background, having competed in the main draw at Wimbledon in both Singles and Doubles. Gary has coached many professional players over the past 25 years and worked with many division one college players in the U.S. As a junior, Head Tennis Professional Andrei Daescu, was a national champion in Romania in the 12 and under and 18 and under age brackets. Andrei continued his career at the collegiate level, playing for the University of Oklahoma, receiving an All-American in his senior year, and defeating Steve Johnson who was ranked as high as #32 in the world. The highlights of his professional career include playing in the Davis Cup for his native country of Romania and participating in the 2015 US Open.

In addition to his on-court duties, Andrei is also highly involved with our team tennis program, and an influential factor in the development of our successful junior program. So much so, that, Andrei also was just named one of the Top 50 Coaches in the Country by America’s Top Coach. He along with director Gary Henderson, work to enhance BallenIsles’ tennis programs through year-round exhibitions, club tournaments and clinics for exceptional tennis experiences at all ages.

Popularity Within the Gates
Among the club’s numerous tennis events are members seeking a more active lifestyle, enhanced skills, or even a new hobby. One of the largest sport-specific studies to date in the Journal of Medicine and Science in Tennis, showed that as of July 2020, those who play tennis have higher general, physical, social, and mental health scores than the general population. Have you started playing within the last year?

The BallenIsles Ladies In-House League has proven popular with over 80 members taking part, with growth each season. The Tennis Industry Association reported a 40% year on year increase in entry-level racquet sales—unsurprising to the club which brought in a high influx of attendees at tennis clinics within the last year. Of the tennis experiences offered, tournaments excite members the most including the recently completed 2021 Singles Club Championships and approaching Doubles and Mixed Club Championships. There are many sports to love at BallenIsles but residents continue to bring the club’s tennis programs to life.
