The Epicenter for the World’s Largest Events
During the Year to Remember, the Club hosted four of the world’s largest golf events. The year started with the PGA Seniors in January, followed by the February 1971 PGA Championship. From October 8-16, BallenIsles also hosted, for the last time, the PGA Tour Qualifying School, led by Tom Watson. To this day, that graduating class is still regarded as the greatest class to come out of the Q school. Finally, as if that wasn’t enough, the Club hosted 46 nations at the 1971 World Cup on November 11-14, becoming the largest field to compete in a World Cup competition.

Honoring Jack Nicklaus

Hosted at BallenIsles, the 53rd PGA Championship was the first time the state of Florida hosted a major. February 28th marked 50 years to the day that Jack Nicklaus parred the 18th hole of the East Course to wrap up a two-shot victory. Nicklaus acknowledged that winning the Championship was “one of the most unique things that happened on February 28th, 1971. I call it a double unique. Not only did I win the major championship, but it was also my wife’s birthday.”

This year, Nicklaus joined us at the Club to memorialize the anniversary of that victory. On top of the beautiful ceremony and plaque presentation, numerous historical pieces were on display including the PGA Championship Wanamaker Trophy, rosters, Tournament tickets, and more. Most notably, Nicklaus announced the multi-year renovation plan for the East Course and practice facilities.
