Andrei Daescu, the Head Racquet Sports Professional at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., was recently selected in the inaugural draft for teams being formed for Major League Pickleball (MLP), a new, elite league that will hold its first competition in November (https://clubandresortbusiness.com/pickleball-evolves-into-professional-league/).

Daescu, who has been at BallenIsles since 2017 and a former Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Touring pro, was drafted by the “Pickle Ranchers,” one of eight teams being formed, each with two men and women, for the four-day Pritchard Cup competition that will be held from November 5-8 at Dreamland in Dripping Springs, Texas. The event, named after the founder of pickleball, Joel Pritchard, will be live-streamed and nationally broadcast on CBS Sports.

Daescu, originally from Romania, was introduced to pickleball at BallenIsles during a pro exhibition at the club in 2017. He has since advanced his skills in the game by competing in pro tour events in 2018 and 2019, and then winning his first tournament earlier in 2021. He also competed in the 2021 Pickleball World Championships, where he was a bronze medalist and represented Team World in its challenge match with Team USA.

The profile of Daescu on the MLP website (www.majorleaguepickleball.net) reads:

“A towering presence, this former ATP Touring professional has perhaps the most significant professional sports experience pre-pickleball. Impossible to lob, this Romanian was introduced to pickleball by Kyle Yates like so many other great players. Andrei is a prime example of the serious talent around the country that does not tour every weekend but that Major League Pickleball will showcase.”

In addition to his on-court duties, Daescu is also heavily involved with BallenIsles’ team tennis program and was also an important factor in the development of the club’s successful junior program.

BallenIsles’ 23-court tennis complex includes an exhibition tennis court and pickleball courts.
